The 348th Reconnaissance Squadron (348 RS) is a United States Air Force Squadron, assigned to the 319th Reconnaissance Wing at Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota. The 348th RS originated in World War II as the 348th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) and conducted strategic bombardment of enemy targets in support of the Mediterranean and European Theater of Operations. The squadron earned two Distinguished Unit Citations for its actions in Sicily and Austria. The 348th RS transitioned to Strategic Air Command where its aircrew flew strategic reconnaissance missions on the RB-36 Peacemaker, and later sat nuclear alert on the B-52 Stratofortress. The theme of global strategic vigilance is now continued by the operation of the RQ-4B Global Hawk unmanned aircraft. 348 RS aircrew support the Air Force’s global High Altitude Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance mission flying 24+ hour sorties in every Combatant Command on the globe.
