The 79th Rescue Squadron operates the HC-130J “Combat King II” and provides rapidly combat personnel recovery forces to theater commanders worldwide. It conducts helicopter air-to-air refueling, airdrop and airland of pararescue personnel and/or equipment in support of combat personnel recovery. Its crews are capable of landing on short, unimproved runways and conducting low-level operations during daytime missions, or night with the aid of night vision goggles.
79th Rescue Squadron is based out of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, a U.S Air Force base located within the city limits approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) south-southeast of downtown Tucson, Arizona. It was established in 1925 as Davis-Monthan Landing Field. The host unit for Davis–Monthan AFB is the 355th Fighter Wing assigned to Twelfth Air Force, part of Air Combat Command. The base is best known as the location of the Air Force Materiel Command’s 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, the “aircraft boneyard” for all excess military and U.S. government aircraft and aerospace vehicles.
