The 3rd Military Battalion (Aerial Exploitation) is a part of the 501st Military Intelligence Brigade at Camp Humphreys (Desiderio Army Airfield), South Korea (ROK). It operates the RC-12X and EO-5C ARL (RC-7) providing timely combat information and intelligence to the tactical and operational war fighters through responsive airborne collection, processing, analysis, and reporting. Camp Humphreys is an hour away from Seoul, and about three hours south of the DMZ. 3rd MI BN can trace its aerial reconnaissance roots back to 1964 with the deployment of the OV-1 Mohawk in the Korean theater.
In 1977 the unit was moved to Camp Humphreys and re-designated the 704th MI Detachment and was attached to the 501st MI Group. In 1979 the 146th Army Security Agency Company, 704th MI Detachment, and the 542th MI Detachment were consolidated and re-designated the 146th MI BN (Aerial Exploitation) . In 1983 it was once again re-designated the 3rd MI BN (Aerial Exploitation) and fulfills its motto: “Winged Vigilance”, providing intelligence collection in support of collection requirements on a daily basis.
