Designated the 35th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron redesignated as the 123d Fighter Squadron and was allotted to the Oregon Air National Guard, on 24 May 1946. It was organized at Portland Municipal Airport, Oregon, and was extended federal recognition on 26 June 1946 by the National Guard Bureau.
 
The Lockheed F-5 Photo Lightnings were based on the P-38G and later models. It was the most numerous version of the Photo Lightning, and one of the most important Photo Reconnaissance (PR) aircraft of the Second World War. It could carry a wide variety of cameras, with some aircraft carrying up to six cameras. P‑38 Photo Reconnaissance planes (called F‑4s and F‑5s) and their pilots were the “eyes” of the AAF. Their only weapon was a camera.
