Minot AFB 23d Expeditionary Bomb Squadron

Minot AFB 23d Expeditionary Bomb Squadron poster art.

In 2021, from April to September, six B-52s and approximately 300 airmen from the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota deployed to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar as the sole B-52 unit participating in the Afghan withdrawal. During the deployment, that group, known as the 23rd Expeditionary Bomb Squadron while abroad, flew more than 3,100 hours and 244 combat sorties. With over-the-horizon range, precision strike, and unrivaled persistent time on station, the 23rd EBS provided versatile and unique capabilities for theater commanders. The 23rd EBS provided armed overwatch as nearly 123,000 people were airlifted from Kabul in the largest air evacuation in history.
