The 50th Attack Squadron (50 ATKS) is a squadron of the United States Air Force, stationed at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, where it operates the MQ-9 Reaper. Formed in August 1917, as the 50th Aero Squadron, the unit flew observation missions in the American built De Haviland DH-4 over the battlefields of World War I. On 6 October 1918, 1Lt Harold E. Goettler and 2Lt Erwin R. Bleckley, of the 50th Aero Squadron were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

The squadron was redesignated the 50th Attack Squadron and activated at Shaw AFB in February 2018. The squadron provides General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper crews the ability to train outside of combat missions. The MQ-9 Reaper is a medium-to-high altitude, long endurance remotely piloted aircraft system.

Shaw Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located approximately 8.4 miles west-northwest of downtown Sumter, South Carolina. It is one of the largest military bases operated by the United States, and is under the jurisdiction of USAF Air Combat Command. The 20th Fighter Wing is the host unit.

The General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper (sometimes called Predator B) is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV, one component of an unmanned aircraft system (UAS)) capable of remotely controlled or autonomous flight operations, developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, primarily for the United States Air Force. The MQ-9 and other UAVs are referred to as Remotely Piloted Vehicles/Aircraft by the USAF to indicate ground control by humans. The MQ-9 is a larger, heavier, more capable aircraft than the earlier General Atomics MQ-1 Predator and can be controlled by the same ground systems. The Reaper has a 950-shaft-horsepower turboprop engine (compared to the Predator’s 115 hp piston engine). The greater power allows the Reaper to carry 15 times more ordnance payload and cruise at about three times the speed of the MQ-1.
