The 61st Fighter Squadron (61FS) “Top Dogs” is one of four F-35A squadrons at Luke AFB, AZ under the 56 Fighter Wing. The Top Dogs are a joint US / Australian squadron that have been training F-35A pilots for the USAF and the RAAF at Luke since 2015. The 61FS traces its heritage back to World War II where it was distinguished as the Top scoring squadron in the European Theater of Operations. (See more below)

The 61st Fighter Squadron is an active United States Air Force unit, assigned to the 56th Operations Group, at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona. It operates the F-35 Lightning II aircraft, conducting Pilot training. The 61st, known as the ‘Top Dogs’, fly F-35A aircraft, to train instructor pilots and initial qualification pilots for Air Combat Command assignments.
The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an American family of single-seat, single-engine, supersonic stealth strike fighters. A multirole combat aircraft designed for both air superiority and strike missions, it also has electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. Lockheed Martin is the prime F-35 contractor with principal partners Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. The F-35 was the product of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program, which was the merger of various combat aircraft programs from the 1980s and 1990s. One progenitor program was the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Advanced Short Take-Off/Vertical Landing (ASTOVL) which ran from 1983 to 1994; ASTOVL aimed to develop a Harrier jump jet replacement for the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and the UK Royal Navy.
