The 69th Reconnaissance Group (69th RG) operates and maintains the USAF’s only, high-altitude, long-endurance RQ-4/EQ-4 aircraft to fulfill requirements generated by the Joint Chiefs of Staff in support of unified commanders and the Secretary of Defense. The group provides theater commanders with near real-time intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and target acquisition data while enhancing theater command and control by providing persistent communications relay capability in austere areas.
The 69th RG is an active U.S. Air Force that is part of Air Combat Command. A geographically-separated unit of the 9th Reconnaissance Wing at Beale Air Force Base, California, the group is stationed at Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota where it is a tenant of the 319th Air Base Wing.
The RQ-4 Global Hawk is an unmanned (UAV) surveillance aircraft. It was initially designed by Ryan Aeronautical (now part of Northrop Grumman), and known as Tier II+ during development. The RQ-4 provides a broad overview and systematic surveillance using high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and long-range electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors with long loiter times over target areas. It can survey as much as 40,000 square miles of terrain a day. The RQ-4B in an improved version with increased payload, wingspan increased to 130.9 ft (39.9 m) and length increased to 47.7 ft (14.5 m).
