What is a “Snack Officer”, “Snacko”, “Snack Bar”, or “Snacko Duty”?
In most flying squadrons pilots work long hours: mission planning, training, flying, debriefing, and many other tasks. With the demands of work, they do not always have time eat as they should. However, they still need something to sustain themselves. Thus, the need for a local place to get a quick bite to eat… and in the world of squadrons, this is the “Snack Bar”. In order to maintain this local convenience store, somebody must make sure this Snack Bar is stocked correctly. This person is usually one of the junior pilots in the squadron and the assignment is typically called: “Snacko Duty” which also usually involves maintaining the Squadron’s Heritage Room (aka: The Squadron Bar).
Most Squadron Bars also have a popcorn machine, and aviators use a specific recipe for their corn. It involves pickled jalapeno peppers in the oil before adding the seeds, and then using seasoning salt when everything has cooked. After adding the jalapenos, the fumes can be overwhelming. A good batch will have your eyes burning! The Squadron Bar has a long and proud history in military aviation. (See more Here)
Although some consider this job as “suck”, many believe that Snacko Duty is one of the better duties to be assigned. The Snack Bar does not stock itself, and it can be a challenge to carry everyone’s favorite snack and keep everything neat and tidy. However, being the “Snacko” is also a privilege, as it can make a big difference in the squadrons moral and can play a significant role in squadron events.
The Snacko’s Heritage Room duties usually includes “Gifting” … finding the right retirement gift, change of command gift, attaboy gifts (special accomplishments) or other awards. They also provide “Swag kits” or “landing fee” items, which is a package of artful items depicting the squadron’s theme or logos for new members entering the unit. This can sometimes be a “10 step hoedown” involving multiple steps such as finding artwork, gathering unit patches, having something engraved, and then putting it all together in a frame for good a presentation. This all takes valuable time and can sometimes be aggravating, as it takes time away from other necessary military duties.
