- Redesignated 21 January 1964 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 506th Infantry, and assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (organic elements concurrently constituted)
- Battalion activated 3 February 1964 at Fort Campbell, Kentucky
- Inactivated 31 July 1972 at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and relieved from assignment to the 101st Airborne Division
- Assigned 30 September 2005 to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, and activated at Fort Campbell, Kentucky
- Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 2d Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment
- Relieved 18 April 2014 from assignment to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division and assigned to the 3d Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division
