T-1 FAIP MAFIA T-Shirt
FAIPs, or “First Assignment Instructor Pilots” are Joint Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training graduates who, instead of being tasked to fly a fighter, bomber, tanker, or transport aircraft (and being sent to some far-flung exotic place), instead are told they will spend many more months, right back at their training base as Instructor Pilots. There is a camaraderie in the FAIP ranks beyond the normal bond Air Force pilots share. They are referred to as the “FAIP Mafia”.
The Raytheon T-1 Jayhawk is a twin-engined jet aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force for advanced pilot training. T-1A students go on to fly airlift and tanker aircraft.
