This historic 19th-century sketch (with modified text) depicts the ironclad CSS Virginia as she appeared in 1862, a vessel that forever changed naval warfare. Converted from the scuttled USS Merrimack, the Virginia demonstrated the power of armored, steam-driven warships during the Battle of Hampton Roads.
Though her service was brief, the impact of the CSS Virginia marked the end of the wooden warship era and the beginning of modern naval combat.
