The squadron is one of the oldest in the United States Air Force, its origins dating to 25 August 1917, being organized at Kelly Field, Tex. It deployed overseas to France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces Shaw Air Force Base is a United States Military facility located approximately 8.4 miles west-N-west of Sumter, South Carolina. It is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force Air Combat Command. The United States Air Force 20th Fighter Wing is the host unit. It is one of the largest military bases operated by the United States, and is one of only two air bases in CONUS with an active railroad line.
