P-38 Through the Ages

P-38 Through the Ages poster art.

The P-38 Lightning was a single-seat, twin piston-engined fighter aircraft used by the United States during World War II. The P-38 was designed for the United States Army Air Corps and featured a distinctive twin-boom design with a central nacelle housing the cockpit and armament. In addition to its use as a general fighter, the P-38 was used in a variety of aerial combat roles, including a highly effective fighter-bomber, a night fighter, and a long-range escort fighter when equipped with drop tanks. The P-38 was also used as a bomber-pathfinder, directing streams of medium and heavy bombers, or even other P-38s, to their targets. The P-38, which was used for aerial reconnaissance, was responsible for 90 percent of the aerial film captured over Europe.
