NBVC Point Mugu E-2C Hawkeye VAW-116

NBVC Point Mugu E-2C Hawkeye VAW-116 poster art.

VAW-116 is a US Navy Command and Control Squadron that deploys aboard USS Carl Vinson as part of Carrier Air Wing Seventeen. VAW-116 flies the E-2C Hawkeye 2000 aircraft. The “Sun Kings” of VAW-116 are stationed at Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu, California. VAW-116 is under the cognizance of Commander, Airborne Command Control and Logistics Wing. In 2008, the Sun Kings deployed with Carrier Air Wing 2 aboard USS Abraham Lincoln to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations to support maritime security operation and Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Naval Air Station Point Mugu is a former U.S. Navy air station that operated from 1942 to 2000 in California. In 2000, it merged with nearby Naval Construction Battalion Center Port Hueneme to form Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC). The E-2 Hawkeye is an American all-weather, carrier-capable tactical airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft. This twin-turboprop aircraft was designed and developed during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The aircraft’s performance has been upgraded with the E-2B, and E-2C versions, where most of the changes were made to the radar and radio communications due to advances in electronic integrated circuits and other electronics.
