Marine Aircraft Group 12 (MAG-12) is a Fixed Wing Group part of 1st Marine Aircraft Wing stationed aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Japan. Marine Aircraft Group 12 consists of a Group Headquarters and 5 subordinate squadrons: Marine Wing Support Squadron 171 (Mission set: Crash Fire Rescue, Expeditionary Airfield building and repair, Engineering, Refuel Ops, Base Support and Base Security Ops), Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12 (Mission Set: A/C Maintenance, logistics support, and ordnance), Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121 (TACAIR operating the F-35B), Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 242 (TACAIR operating the F/A-18D), and Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152 (Assault Support and aerial refueling with the KC-130J). MAG-12 is forward deployed to the Pacific AOR primarily to serve as a defense deterrent and response to North Korea and to support mutual partnership allies in the region with exercise and training support. They are located on mainland Japan in Iwakuni near the famous landmark known as the Kintai Kyo Bridge and Castle. Just 45 minutes south of Miyajima’s UNESCO world heritage shrine Itsukushima and the floating Tori Gate, and 1 Hour South of Hiroshima Japan where the atomic bomb was dropped in August of 1945. MAG-12‘s nickname is the “Ready Group” and motto: “Fight and Win Tonight”.
