Holloman AFB New Mexico 82d ATS

Holloman AFB New Mexico 82d ATS canvas art.

Detachment 1, 82d Aerial Targets Squadron, continues the legacy of utilizing “Not Dead Yet” moth-balled fighters as full-scale aerial targets to replicate enemy aircraft. Det 1’s maintenance team brings these old birds back from the dead, getting them flying again in order to evaluate United States’ air-to-air and surface-to-air missile systems. Previously employing the QF-102, QF-100, QF-106, QF-4, and now QF-16 “Zombie Viper”, Det 1 operates at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in New Mexico. They collaborate with a vital element from the US Army: civilians and contractors who operate the WSMR Integrated Target System. This system enables pilots to fly the QF-16 remotely. Det 1 also provides adversary support to the 54th Fighter Group at Holloman AFB, joint and international test and training with manned QF-16s.
