Marine Fighter Squadron 122 (VMFA-122) was commissioned on 1 Mar 1942 at Camp Kearny, CA. Originally the “Candystripers”, the squadron conducted combat operations in the Pacific islands of Guadacanal and Peleliu. VMF-122 formed the Marine’s first and only aerial demonstration team, “Flying Leathernecks”, and toured the country for two years before transitioning to the first Marine jet squadron to be both day and night qualified for carrier operations. VMF-122 relocated to MCAS Cherry Point, NC before settling in at MCAS Beaufort, SC with delivery of the first F8U-1’s “Cursader”. VMF-122 officially became known as the “Crusaders” for the next several decades conducting combat operations in support of Khe Sahn and other offenses. During this time as VMF(AW) 122 transitioned to the f4-B it was designated Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 122. Throughout the 1980’s, 1990’s, and the 2000’s, VMFA-122 conducted multiple training deployments and combat deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. During this time, the squadron returned to its WWII name, “The Werewolves”.
In Dec 2016, VMFA-122 officially became known as the “Flying Leathernecks”. VMFA-122 transitioned into a F-35B “Lightning” squadron in Oct 2017 at MCAS Yuma, AZ. VMFA-122 is the third operational Marine Crops Short Takeoff and Vertical Lift (VSTOL) squadron, that provides lethal fighter power to the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) and joint forces. “MACH ALTUS”!
