The 79th Rescue Squadron is a United States Air Force combat search and rescue unit of the 563rd Rescue Group (563 RG), 355th Wing (355 W), 15th Air Force (15 AF) at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. Its members operate the HC-130J “Combat King II” to provide combat search and rescue worldwide. It conducts helicopter air refueling, airdrop, and air-land missions in support of combat personnel recovery. Its crews are capable of landings on short, unimproved, runways and low-level operations during day or night with night vision goggles. Davis-Monthan AFB was established in 1925 as Davis-Monthan Landing Field. The base is best known as the location of the Air Force Materiel Command’s 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, the “Aircraft Boneyard,” for all excess military and U.S. government aircraft and aerospace vehicles.
