Â
The 393rd Bomb Squadron, also known as the 393d Bomb Squadron, is a unit of the 509th Bomb Wing based at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. It flies nuclear-capable Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit strategic bombers.
Â
The 393rd Bombardment Squadron, formed in 1944, was the only United States Army Air Forces squadron trained for nuclear warfare during World War II. It is the only unit to have used nuclear weapons in combat, dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. Following WWII, the squadron participated in the United States military’s atomic bomb testing on Bikini Atoll, and it has continued to operate nuclear-capable aircraft since then.
