The 370th Flight Test Squadron (370 FLTS) is part of the 413th Flight Test Group, Robins Air Force Base, Georgia. A geographically separated unit, the 370 FLTS is located at Edwards Air Force Base, California, where it operates KC-135 & KC-46 for tanker test support, and operates B-1, C-12, C-17, F-16, F-35, RQ-4, T-38 to augment the flight & cyber test missions of the Air Force Test Center. Situated in the Southern California High Desert, the 370th was formed as part of the 307th Bombardment Group during World War II, the “Long Rangers”. Now known as the “Flyin’ Elvi”, it stood back up in 2001 to support flight test at Test Ops as an Air Force Reserve squadron.
Edwards Air Force Base is a U.S. Air Force Base in California. The base was formally named after World War II (USAAF) veteran and test pilot “Capt. Glen Edwards” in 1950; prior to then the facility was known as: Muroc Air Force Base. Home of the Air Force Test Center, Air Force Test Pilot School, and NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center. It’s also home for the Air Force Materiel Command center for conducting and supporting research and development of flight and testing and evaluating aerospace systems from concept to combat. Noteworthy events at Edwards include Chuck Yeager’s flight that broke the sound barrier in the Bell X-1, test flights of the North American X-15, the first landings of the Space Shuttle, and the around-the-world flight of the Rutan Voyager.
