Apra Harbor Guam USS Houston SSN 713

Apra Harbor Guam USS Houston SSN 713 poster art.

The mighty submarine HOUSTON (SSN 713) was the fourth ship named in honor of the most populous city in the state of Texas. She was commissioned on 25 September 1982 at Newport News Shipbuilding. The hull was blessed with a bottle of champagne by Mrs. Barbara Bush, wife of then Vice President George H. W. Bush. HOUSTON was homeported in San Diego, CA, Bremerton, WA, Apra Harbor, Guam and Pearl Harbor, HI. The crews which brought this ship to life made numerous deployments to provide the warm blanket of freedom under which a grateful nation slept during the Cold War. These actions remain classified to this day, but the numerous fleet commendations and awards speak to the importance and success. Notably, HOUSTON appeared in two movies, most famously in the blockbuster hit “The Hunt for Red October” based on the best-selling novel written by Tom Clancy. HOUSTON’s remarkable, 35-year record of service ended on 15 September 2017 when she was decommissioned.
