FAIPs, or “First Assignment Instructor Pilots” are Joint Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training graduates who, instead of being tasked to fly a fighter, bomber, tanker, or transport aircraft (and being sent to some far-flung exotic place), instead are told they will spend many more months, right back at their training base as Instructor Pilots. There is a camaraderie in the FAIP ranks beyond the normal bond Air Force pilots share. They are referred to as the “FAIP Mafia”. The Northrop T-38 Talon is a two-seat, twinjet supersonic jet trainer.
