Fairchild AFB KC-135R 116th ARS heritage poster art.

The 116th Air Refueling Squadron (116 ARS) is a unit of the Washington Air National Guard 141st Air Refueling Wing located at Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington. The lineage of the 141st Air Refueling Wing, began with federal recognition on August 6, 1924, as the 116th Observation Squadron, 41st Division Air Services at Felts Field in the Spokane Valley. The 116th is one of the oldest National Guard flying units in the United States. Today, the 116th Air Refueling Squadron employs the KC-135R “Stratotanker” out of Fairchild AFB, and is the only flying Air Guard unit in Washington State. The 116th, known as the “Ace of Spades”, has flown 40 aircraft in its 93 years of service! The squadron insignia, the ace of spades with a dagger driven through the center of the card scripted "Caveat hostis", Latin for "Let the enemy beware", was approved on 18 July 1931 by the War Department and is still in use today.

USAF SERE Specialist - Fairchild AFB poster art.

Every member of an aircrew must be able to survive on their own in any environment under any condition should their aircraft go down. Members of Air Force Special Operations, Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) specialists teach Airmen everything they need to know to do just that. From building shelters and procuring water to land navigation and evasion techniques, these highly trained experts impart the skills needed for Airmen to survive on their own and evade the enemy until they can be rescued and brought home.

The USAF Survival School is a part of the 336th Training Group at Fairchild Air Force Base and is the U.S. Air Force’s sole unit responsible for training the famed SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) specialists who in turn, train more than 6,000 students a year. SERE Specialist are the instructors that teach all of the survival schools for the air force. The U.S. Air Force is the only branch of service where serving as a "SERE Specialist", is a full-time career.

SERE training is intended, above all, to provide students with the skills needed to live up to the U.S. military code of conduct when in uncertain or hostile environments.

THE YEAR OF THE 92nd ! It has been 92 years since the 1st air refueling by “Wesley May”. In celebration of this historic event we created this “Fairchild AFB, 92nd Air Refueling Squadron - Inland Empire” Poster Art!

“Wesley May” climbs from the wing of one aircraft to the wing of another with a 5 gallon can of gasoline strapped to his back, making the first “air-to-air” refueling. (See image gallery) Wing walkers played an important part in the Army Air Corps (now the U.S. Air Force) and Navy in the advancement of aviation. They were instrumental in the first air-to-air refueling, as well as long-distance flight records. On November 12th, 1921, Wesley May strapped a fuel tank on his back and performed a plane-to-plane transfer. Additional tests were undertaken, and a hose with aid of a wing walker was the next exploration into aerial refueling. A big thank you to all our Aviation Tanker Squadrons!
