FAIPs, or “First Assignment Instructor Pilots” are Joint Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training graduates who, instead of being tasked to fly a fighter, bomber, tanker, or transport aircraft (and being sent to some far-flung exotic place), instead are told they will spend many more months, right back at their training base as Instructor Pilots. There is a camaraderie in the FAIP ranks beyond the normal bond Air Force pilots share. They are referred to as the “FAIP Mafia”.

The 87th Flying Training Squadron is part of the United States Air Force 47th Flying Training Wing based at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas. It operates T-38 Talon aircraft conducting flight training. The squadron is one of the oldest in the U.S. Air Force, its origins dating to 18 August 1917. They are also known as the: "Red Bulls"! - Laughlin AFB is located 7 miles from Mexico and is known locally as: “The edge of America”.

The 704th Test Group (704 TG) (formerly the 96th Test Group (96 TG) ) at Holloman AFB, New Mexico, is a unit of the Arnold Engineering Development Complex, (AEDC)headquartered at Arnold AFB, Tenn., which is part of the Air Force Test Center, headquartered at Edwards AFB, California. 

The 586th Flight Test Squadron operates four highly modified T-38C aircraft, capable of carrying up to a 1,000 lb store. Additionally, the 586 FLTS operates a C-12J modified with two centerline pylons and multiple modular antenna mounts to support rapid prototype testing.

The 1st Reconnaissance Squadron (1 RS) is the United States military’s oldest flying unit, first established on 5 March 1913. The squadron has maintained an unbroken heritage of over a century from its founding. Originally organized in anticipation of a potential breach in security along the border between the United States and Mexico, General John J. Pershing directed the 1st Aero Squadron to become the first tactical aviation unit to participate in American military action. The 1st RS has flown 47 different aircraft while being stationed worldwide at 52 locations, including 4 stints at sea.

The 394th Combat Training Squadron is a United States Air Force unit assigned to the 509th Operations Group. It is stationed at Whiteman AFB, Missouri. The mission of the squadron is to train B-2 Spirit aircrews. The 394th is the fourth oldest squadron in the United States Air Force. Its history dated to 5 May 1917 as the 4th Aero Squadron. The 394th Combat Training Squadron provides the 509th Bomb Wing with qualified, mission-ready B-2 and Northrop T-38 Talon pilots to support worldwide Joint Chiefs of Staff taskings. The 394th is also responsible for implementing all B-2 and T-38 formal training courses. The unit supervises and oversees all T-38 operations and performs quality assurance for all maintenance and aircrew training devices, including weapon system trainers.
