Roosevelt ordered the Secretary of War to acquire land to build a military airfield at the present site of <strong>Joint Base Andrews</strong>, with construction beginning later that year. On 19 April 1943, the first permanent unit arrived, the 463rd Base Headquarters and Air Base Squadron.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Naval Air Facility Washington DC (NAFW)</strong> is one of only three Navy Reserve bases in the U.S. As the lead for 12 Department of Navy tenant commands aboard Joint Base Andrews - NAF Washington, its mission is to provide training, readiness, and facility support to its tenants. NAFW also provides administrative and operational oversight to Fleet Logistics Support Squadron ONE, the Navy’s only executive transportation squadron operating the C - 37. NAFW is called the “Crossroads of the Navy” and its personnel referred to as ”Hellcats” after the F6F - 5K World War II Hellcat aircraft static display outside the headquarters.</span></p>
