The 56th Special Operations Intelligence Squadron (56 SOIS) is set in the high plains of New Mexico where they are embedded in every operational squadron at the 27th Special Operations Wing, Cannon AFB, New Mexico. They support a variety of special operations assets to include the CV-22 Osprey, MQ-9 Reaper, AC-130W Stinger II, MC-130J Commando II, and U-28A. They have coined themselves the “six shooters” and have established a western motif for awards and squadron culture.

The 16th Special Operations Squadron (16 SOS) is part of the 27th Special Operations Wing at Cannon AFB, New Mexico. They currently operate the AC-130W Stinger II Gunship providing a robust close air support package to conventional and unconventional ground forces through our constant deployed presence. The 16th has a long heritage reaching all the way back to the inception of the gunship in the Vietnam War, and the current iteration of our AC-130 provides precision strike capabilities with the 30mm and 105mm cannons, as well as precision guided munitions (guided bombs) mounted under the wings and in pods attached to the cargo ramp. The 16th SOS provides one of the most highly requested CAS assets in the current theater of operations, and proudly wears our “SPECTRE” heritage on our sleeve and on our patch.
