This classic vintage style military aviation travel poster “P3-Orion and Sub SSN-774” is dedicated to all those who flew, maintained or supported the P3-Orion or Submarine class SSN-774. The Lockheed P-3 Orion is a four-engine turboprop anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft developed for the United States Navy and introduced in the 1960s. Lockheed based it on the L-188 Electra commercial airliner. The aircraft is easily distinguished from the Electra by its distinctive tail stinger or “MAD Boom”, used for the magnetic detection of submarines. The Virginia class, also known as the SSN-774 class, is a class of nuclear-powered fast attack submarines (hull classification symbol SSN) in service with the United States Navy.

Silent Service T-shirt.

Silent Service: The US Submarine service began in April of 1900 and since then has played integral roles in WWII, The Cold War and many other conflicts. Modern Submarines are Nuclear Powered and consist of Attack and Ballistic submarines. According to Chief of Naval Operations Submarine Warfare Division, “A submarine is among the most technologically advanced machines ever built. The combination of computer technology, precision navigation, atmosphere regeneration, sensitive sonar equipment, sound quieting, nuclear power, and precision weapons make for a most unusual environment. Imagine working and living in a 300-foot long, 30-foot wide, three-story building with no windows and surrounded by technology. Then lock the doors, submerge beneath the surface of the ocean and travel silently underwater for months. This requires a tremendous amount of skill, knowledge, personal discipline, and teamwork. Over one hundred crewmembers work and live together for months at a time to defend their country and protect U.S. interests around the world.”
