Kansas UH-60 Free State Dustoff poster art.
“Free State Dustoff”, a Kansas Army National Guard Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) unit based out of Forbes Field, Topeka, Kansas. They fly UH-60 Blackhawks and their unit name is “Free State Dustoff” which refers to the founding of the state and the bloody border wars to keep slavery out of Kansas.
“DUSTOFF” is the callsign specific to U.S. Army Air Ambulance units. CASEVACs by air today are almost exclusively done by helicopter, a practice begun on a small scale toward the end of World War II; before that, STOL aircraft, such as the Fieseler Fi 156 or Piper J-3 were used. Now the Free State uses the UH-60 the UH-60A entered service in 1979, to replace the Bell UH-1 Iroquois as the tactical transport helicopter.
Forbes Field is now the home of the Kansas Air National Guard‘s 190th Air Refuelling Wing and the 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation, Kansas Army National Guard.
