VMGR-252 Detachment A is a four plane detachment of KC-130J aircraft and ~82 Marines.  The det operates from a “hub” location in Morón, Spain and “spokes” to Cooperative Security Locations (CSLs) such as NAS Sigonella, Italy; NSA Souda Bay, Crete; Dakar, Senegal; Accra, Ghana; and Libreville, Gabon.  The squadron’s pilots, aircrew, and maintainers work hard to deliver cargo, provide air to air refueling, and air delivery across three continents.  VMGR-252 carries the “Otis” callsign and is the "oldest continuously active squadron in the Marine Corps".  Detachment A proudly carries on the “Otis” legacy, and when the fight is needed at the front, VMGR-252 Det A “Bronco” Marines lead the charge!

The squadron was formed June 1, 1928, and designated Headquarters Detachment 7M in San Diego, California. The squadron was re-designated several times in the next decade. It received the designation Marine Utility Squadron 252 (VMJ-252) on July 1, 1941, and Marine Transport Squadron 252 (VMR-252) on April 1, 1945. The squadron was heavily involved during World War II and participated in the following campaigns: Pearl Harbor, Marianas, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

Morón Air Base is located in southern Spain, approximately 35 miles (56 km) S/E of the city of Seville and 75 miles (121 km) N/E of Naval Station Rota. The base gets its name from the nearby town of Morón de la Frontera. Morón's massive flight line, in-ground aircraft refueling system, long runway and prime location on the Iberian peninsula, close to the Mediterranean and the Middle East, means the base is a vital link in any operation moving east from the United States.

The KC-130J is the latest variant operated by the U.S. Marine's, with 38 delivered out of 47 ordered. It replaced older KC-130F and KC-130R variants, while USMC reserve units still operate 28 KC-130T aircraft.

MCAS Miramar, is home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, which is the aviation element of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. It is located in Miramar, San Diego, California, about 10 miles (16 km) north of Downtown San Diego.
