178th Attack Squadron MQ-9

178th Attack Squadron MQ-9 poster art.

The 178th Attack Squadron (178th ATKS) is a unit of the North Dakota Air National Guard 119th Wing located at Fargo Air National Guard Base, North Dakota. The “Happy Hooligans” are a unit with a proud heritage and have flown 10 different aircraft since 1947.  In October of 2016, the 178th ATKS transitioned from flying the MQ-1 “Predator” to the MQ-9 “Reaper”.

Fargo Air National Guard Base is a United States Air National Guard facility located adjacent to Hector International Airport in Fargo, North Dakota. The 119th Wing, 177th Airlift Squadron, and 178th Attack Squadron are located at the facility.

The General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper (sometimes called Predator B) is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capable of remotely controlled or autonomous flight operations, developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems primarily for the United States Air Force. The MQ-9 is the first hunter-killer UAV designed for long-endurance, high-altitude surveillance. In 2006, the then–Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force General T. Michael Moseley said: “We’ve moved from using UAVs primarily in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance roles before Operation Iraqi Freedom, to a true hunter-killer role with the Reaper.”
