Detachment 850 alumni, Colonel Bernard F. Fisher, University of Utah Class of 1951, was awarded the Medal of Honor on 19 January 1967. Facing perilous odds, Colonel Fisher piloted a Douglas A1-E Skyraider in the rescue of a downed fellow pilot in enemy territory during the Vietnam conflict. Colonel Fisher passed away on 16 August 2014, but his legacy lives on in the young men and women of Detachment 850. “Fly High Mighty Skyraiders”!
The Douglas A-1 Skyraider (formerly AD) is an American single-seat attack aircraft that saw service between the late 1940s and early 1980s. The Skyraider had a remarkably long and successful career; it became a piston-powered, propeller-driven anachronism in the jet age, and was nicknamed “Spad”, after the French World War I fighter.
